Summer Exhibits at Henry Doorly Zoo

Image via Pixabay.com One of the best things about living in Omaha, Nebraska, is that there are so many fun things to do, including exploring the Henry Doorly Zoo. Summer is a great time to visit because many exhibits that were closed over the winter reopen and the animals are more active when it's warm outside. Here are two exhibits you can look forward to. Hubbard Gorilla Valley After a temporary closure due to renovations, the popular Hubbard Gorilla Valley reopens this summer. This 3-acre exhibit gives the resident gorillas 2 acres to play and socialize while visitors enjoy their antics. What makes this exhibit so unique is that the gorillas run free while the zoo's human guests watch them from enclosures strategically placed throughout the grounds. These enclosures allow visitors to get up close and personal with the gorillas without interfering with their routines. Deer Park Lagoon Originally, Deer Park Lagoon served as an ice skating rink and fishing pond in Riverview Park before the park was transformed into Henry Doorly Zoo. Today, it's the summer home for several of the zoo's monkeys. The spider monkeys, howler monkeys, and squirrel monkeys love to swing from the branches of the artificial Banyan tree that sits in the middle of the lagoon. Many of the zoo's monkeys give birth in the spring, so keep an eye out for mothers and their little ones. Hundreds of koi also live in the lagoon, and you can feed them pellets from the covered bridge. These are just two of the many exciting exhibits you can enjoy at Henry Doorly Zoo. Plan a summer visit for an experience the entire family will enjoy.

2 Best Bike Paths in Omaha

One great way to do it is to get your bike out of storage and hit one of the city's bike paths. Here are two of the best bike paths in Omaha. Skyline Trail The 5-mile Skyline Trail, located in Omaha's Elkhorn neighborhood, is great for bicyclists and hikers of all skill levels. It takes cyclists through a variety of landscapes in a short distance. It starts out on Elkhorn Drive and leads to Ta-Ha-Zouka Park. From there, you'll go across the train tracks and then over the West Papillion Creek. As the trail starts to run parallel with the Greenbrier Park stream, you'll catch glimpses of cornfields. Once you pass through Greenbrier Park, you'll end up in the Skyline Road suburbs, and then the trail ends on W. Dodge Road. Keystone Trail to Bellevue Loop More experienced cyclists will want to put themselves to the test on the 27-mile Keystone Trail. This paved pathway runs through the northwest side of Omaha and then turns south along the Little Papillion Creek, where you'll ride across the creek's flood control levees. Highlights of the trail include an old railroad bridge and a wooden trestle across the riverbank. While a small portion of the trail runs through a commercial district, traffic isn't usually an issue. Eventually, you'll end up at the trail's southern extension, which loops around the Bellevue suburb. 1 These are just two of Omaha's many excellent bike paths.
