One of the best things about living in Omaha, Nebraska, is that there are so many fun things to do, including exploring the Henry Doorly Zoo. Summer is a great time to visit because many exhibits that were closed over the winter reopen and the animals are more active when it’s warm outside. Here are two exhibits you can look forward to.

Hubbard Gorilla Valley

After a temporary closure due to renovations, the popular Hubbard Gorilla Valley reopens this summer. This 3-acre exhibit gives the resident gorillas 2 acres to play and socialize while visitors enjoy their antics. What makes this exhibit so unique is that the gorillas run free while the zoo’s human guests watch them from enclosures strategically placed throughout the grounds. These enclosures allow visitors to get up close and personal with the gorillas without interfering with their routines.

Deer Park Lagoon

Originally, Deer Park Lagoon served as an ice skating rink and fishing pond in Riverview Park before the park was transformed into Henry Doorly Zoo. Today, it’s the summer home for several of the zoo’s monkeys. The spider monkeys, howler monkeys, and squirrel monkeys love to swing from the branches of the artificial Banyan tree that sits in the middle of the lagoon. Many of the zoo’s monkeys give birth in the spring, so keep an eye out for mothers and their little ones. Hundreds of koi also live in the lagoon, and you can feed them pellets from the covered bridge.

These are just two of the many exciting exhibits you can enjoy at Henry Doorly Zoo. Plan a summer visit for an experience the entire family will enjoy.
